Dharmasthala — where the journey began
Shri Venugopal Shastry (Devdhar) was born and raised in Dharmasthala, Karnataka, in an environment closely connected with temple life, devotion and service. After completing his schooling through the 10th standard in Dharmasthala, he chose the traditional path of Vedic education.
1982 — Sringeri Veda Pathashala
In 1982, he joined the Veda Pathashala at Sringeri and began intensive traditional study of the Yajurveda. He completed Yajurveda Kramantha Adhyayana, an advanced oral discipline requiring sustained memorization, precise pronunciation, repetition and teacher-to-student transmission.
His years at Sringeri were not limited to recitation. They formed a way of life centered on Veda Adhyayana, Achara, Anushtana, temple worship, discipline, Dharma and Seva.
Student of the Sringeri Jagadgurus
During his years at Sringeri, Shri Venugopal Shastry studied within the living Guru–Shishya tradition and has confirmed that he was a student of the present Sringeri Jagadguru and the Parama Guru. Their guidance formed part of the spiritual discipline, Vedic learning and sense of priestly responsibility that continue to shape his service.
Priestly service at Sringeri, India
After completing his formal Vedic studies, he continued directly into priestly service at Sringeri. This brought together rigorous Vedic learning with the practical responsibility of serving devotees and religious institutions through pujas, homas, samskaras, parayanas and temple observances.
1996 — formally transferred from Sringeri to the United States
In 1996, Shri Venugopal Shastry was formally transferred from Sringeri, India, to the Sringeri institution in Pennsylvania. He was the first Chief Priest from the opening of the Sringeri temple in the United States and served there through 2010.
Those years placed him at the center of a growing Hindu community in America. His responsibilities included family ceremonies, temple worship, festivals, Vedic chanting, major homas and large community programs, while working with other qualified priests and scholars when programs required a larger team.
Major Vedic programs
Across his priestly career, he has led as well as chanted at major programs including Kumbhabhishekams, Maha Rudrams, Chandi Homas, Shata Chandis, Ghana Parayanas and Veda Parayanas. His experience also includes Rudra Homam, Navagraha Shanti, Udaka Shanti, Vastu Shanti, Prana Pratishtha and other temple-related rituals.
For large temple programs, the specific deity, Agama or paddhati, institution, scale and priestly team matter. The website therefore presents his experience without suggesting that one generic procedure applies to every temple.
2010 onward — independent Vedic service
From 2010 onward, Shri Venugopal Shastry continued his priestly vocation independently. He has served Indian and Indian-American families extensively across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Connecticut, and travels elsewhere in the United States by arrangement.
From 2022 through 2024, he also served at the Satyanarayana Swamy Temple in Middletown, Connecticut. He is presently based in Edison, New Jersey.
Family ceremonies and sacred milestones
His family services include Vedic weddings, Upanayanam, Griha Pravesham, Satyanarayana Puja and Katha, Namakaranam, Punyahavachanam, Seemantham, Annaprashanam, Aksharabhyasam, homas, shanti ceremonies and many other Vedic observances. Families are encouraged to describe their occasion and tradition even when they do not know the Sanskrit name of the ceremony.
Carrying Dharma to the next generation
Shri Venugopal Shastry takes an active interest in encouraging Indian and Indian-American youth to understand Hindu and Vedic culture. Where appropriate, he explains the purpose of important ritual stages so children and adults can participate with understanding while the traditional form of the ceremony is preserved.
